Kevin Hanson 1957-2025
It is with great sadness that the Blue Stars share the news of the passing of Board President Kevin Hanson. Kevin was an invaluable part of the Blue Stars family—an exceptional leader, a dedicated advocate for the organization, and a friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Kevin’s connection to the Blue Stars spanned nearly five decades. He began his journey with the corps as a baritone member in 1977 and 1978, and continued serving in 1979 as an equipment truck driver. His passion for youth development and the marching arts extended beyond Blue Stars in the early 1980s, when he served as Director of the Royal Knight Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
After serving as Chief Financial Officer for Youth Education in the Arts (YEA!), Kevin returned to Wisconsin in 2011 and joined the Blue Stars Board of Directors. He was elected President of the Board in 2016, a role he held with distinction and deep commitment. Under his leadership, the organization experienced significant growth and increased stability in its operations. Kevin was inducted into the Blue Stars Hall of Fame in 2019.
“Kevin’s leadership on our board of directors cannot be overstated,” said Blue Stars CEO Brad Furlano. “His calm, steady hand as board president oversaw a period of time where we became more disciplined and professional in the way we run our organization. The Blue Stars will greatly miss his insight, humor, and dedication to our mission. I will miss his wisdom, encouragement, and most importantly, friendship.”
Professionally, Kevin served as Chief Financial Officer of the Forest County Potawatomi, Wisconsin Tribe, which owns and operates the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino in Milwaukee. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, and was a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Wisconsin.
Kevin resided in Whitelaw, Wisconsin, and is survived by his family, including two children and one grandchild.
Kevin’s legacy is one of service, leadership, and unwavering belief in the mission of the Blue Stars. His impact will be felt for years to come by members, staff, volunteers, alumni, and supporters across the organization.
Please keep Kevin’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
