Brass Team

Mia lives in Chandler, Arizona and is in her 11th year of teaching and third at Eastmark High School in Mesa Arizona. Under Mia's direction the Eastmark band placed in the top eight of their division, their inaugural year at AzMBA Championships in 2021 and in 2022 led the firebird marching band to a bronze medal finish in AzMBA and 7th place in the ABODA State Championships. Under her direction the concert ensembles at Eastmark have earned several high ratings at various festivals. As a composer, Mia writes music for several marching ensembles of various sizes and competitive levels as well as works for wind bands. Mia also serves as an adjudicator for the ABODA Marching Band Circuit and ABODA Jazz festivals. She also has experience as a region band chair and has served as an adjudicator for the AMEA Central Region Auditions for several years. Mia has also been a member of the brass faculty for the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps since 2020, working mainly as a trumpet instructor.

As a performer, Mia works as a freelance commercial and lead trumpet player, playing in ensembles ranging from big bands to brass quintets and has performed with the ASU Jazz Bands, Wind Ensembles as well as Salt River Brass and Ballet Arizona. Mia was also one of the first members of the Virtual Trumpet Ensemble.

Mia holds a masters degree from Arizona State University and is also working on a Ph.D in music education at Arizona State University, with research interest on gender, diversity/inclusion and rehearsal techniques for instrumental ensembles. During her coursework, Mia served as a graduate assistant in the school of music, teaching various courses such as digital music, intro to music education and practicum for instrumental music. She was also a graduate assistant with the ASU Sun Devil Marching Band and Pep Bands with her mentor: athletic band director Jim Hudson. Mia was also fortunate to study improvisation and jazz theory in different classes and settings from several of the ASU jazz faculty members.

When she’s not teaching, Mia spends time with her kids Kam and Jace and cheering on The Arizona Sports Teams and also stays active by playing as a wide receiver and defensive back for Phoenix Fahrenheit, Womens+ competitive flag football team in Phoenix’s branch of the NGFFL, a national LGBTQ+ Flag Football League.
